Summary : Franciscan friary founded in 1226 by John de Hastingford in a house in Ciningsford, 250m South of the cathedral. During the early 14th century the friary was extended and included the construction of a new church. The nave was 105ft. long and the cloister on the north side of the nave was a square of its full length.The friary was dissolved in 1538. Excavations in the mid-1990's recovered much of the plan of the friary and part of the cemetery was also excavated. |

The Franciscan or Grey Friars arrived in Norwich in 1226 and were established on a site given to them by John de Hastingford between the churches of St. Cuthbert and St. Vedast. In the early 14th century, having secured considerable extensions to their land holdings they set about building a new church on a grand scale. The nave being 105ft. long and the cloister on the north side of the nave was a square of its full length. Dissolved in 1538. The site, church and all possessions of the Grey Friars of Norwich were formally granted to the Duke of Norfolk by the crown on 12 March 1539. Plan of location which is centred at TG 23430861. |
