Summary : Nos. 1 and 2 The Square. Pair of houses: part of monastic outer court range of Blanchland Abbey, (NY95SE4), remodelled and extended to rear mid-C18. Rubble with tooled dressings; stone slate roof. Front elevation 2 storeys, 5 bays, irregular. Renewed doors in bays 2 and 3, the former in chamfered surround. In bay 2 the remains of a blocked shouldered arch with small chamfered window to right. Brick right end stack. Rear elevation shows parallel gabled 18th century block at rear of No. 2. No. 2 has a 13th or 14th century doorway (now to cupboard) in former rear wall, with chamfered shouldered arch and drawbar tunnel in jamb. Roof of front section has 3 principal-rafter trusses with chamfered tiebeams.
