Summary : Saxon and early Norman cathedral and minster. This was founded in 604 by Ethelbert, King of Kent. Justus was consecrated first Bishop of Rochester by Archbishop Augustine and the church was placed in the hands of secular priests. After the appointment of Bishop Gundulf in 1076, the saxon buildings were demolished and the new Cathedral built. Excavations have demonstrated that the Saxon cathedral was situated to the west of the present buildings. Six possible Saxon graves were excavted in 1990.
