Summary : Pottery kiln (Site 13) part of the Donyatt Pottery Industry, identified in Donyatt. An estate map of 1760-80 showns buildings occupying the site but these had been demolished by 1838. Field walking first identified the site in 1950 when a scatter of 17th-18th century pottery was noted. The site was occupied by a searchlight battery in 1940. Excavations in 1992 located two kilns and a potters workshop dated to the last decade of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. The kilns may have been operated by John Jewell, a potter from Bideford, who moved to Donyatt in 1691. Finds are present in the County Museum, Taunton. |
