Summary : Pottery kiln (site 4) part of the Donyatt Pottery industry, identified on the west side of Whitney Bottom. The site was first recorded during construction of a farm building. Excavations in 1969-70 identified a cob walled building and pottery wasters dating from 1700 until 1750. The building contained a hearth and may have been a drying shed associated with the kiln. No in situ kiln structures were recorded. The wasters were of mugs, cups, pipkins and dishes. Most of the site was levelled circa 1800, a pit containing mid-late 19th century pottery was recorded. |
