Summary : Pottery kiln (site 3), part of the Donyatt Pottery Industry identified on the north side of Crock Street. The site was recorded as a pottery scatter during field walking in 1962 and 1964. Excavations in 1971 located a kiln situated within a circular structure. The kiln had two opposed flues and was orientated east-west. Its superstructure appeared to have been constructed from large clay coils. The pottery was in a range of hard, quartzitic fabric. Forms included wheel thrown jugs, cisterns, costrels, cups, bowls and cooking pots. Production took place during the late 15th- early 16th century. A building which was demolished in 1750 was also recorded during the excavations. |
