Summary : Late 14th-17th centuries The gatehouse of the Benedictine nunnery founded 980, (SK20SE2). Of rough ashlar, 2-storeyed, with a wide gateway which has lost its north and south arches in later rebuilding. The side walls are of stone, and there is a central projection flanked by blocked later doorways. On the east side of the main gateway is a narrow foot-way with north and south entrances having chamfered jambs and segmental heads. Above the gateway and facing the upper chambers east of it the walls are of 17th century timber-framing, with a late 14th century roof. The chamber is lighted by small rectangular windows, with altered heads, in the north wall, and in the south wall a 14th century doorway leads to a straight stairway. The buildings appear to be used partly as a boys' club and partly as a storehouse. |
