Summary : Three Mithraic altars found in this area suggest the probable site of a Mithraeum. (RIB) Number 1994, found in or before 1725 at Castlesteads, now lost; inscribed 'to the Sun-god Mithras'. RIB Number 1992,found in or before 1694 built into a stone wall at Castlesteads, now lost; inscribed 'to the Invincible Sun-god'. RIB Number 1993, found at Castlesteads before 1604, is now at Rokeby.
More information : (NY 512 635) An altar to Sol Mithras and another to Sol, found at Castlesteads prove the existence of a mithraeum, although no structure is known. (1)

Roman Inscriptions in Britain (RIB) Number 1994, found in or before 1725 at Castlesteads, now lost. Inscribed 'to the Sun-god Mithras', RIB Number 1992, found in or before 1694 built into a stone wall at Castlesteads. Now lost. Inscribed 'to the Invincible Sun-god'. A third altar to Mithras, RIB Number 1993, found at Castlesteads before 1604, is now at Rokeby. Full details of inscriptions given. (2)
