Summary : The site of Roman turret 54B, part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall. It was uncovered by excavation, although there are no visible remains.
More information : (NY 5407 6439) Turret (GS) (Site of) (1) Howgill Turret, 54b, was found 535 yards west of Turret 54a. Four good courses of red sandstone masonry were seen, and laminated turf from the Turf Wall was noted to the east, eight feet north of the Great Wall. This therefore is a Turf-Wall turret, built before the stone wall. (2) No surface traces. (3) Pottery report from 1933 excavations, includes discussion of the site dating and construction. (4) There is no surface trace of the turret; OS position at NY 5407 6439 accepted. (5) Scheduled (6) Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (7)
