Summary : The site of milecastle 55, part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall. It was excavated in 1900. The site of the milecastle is precisely at the position marked by the Ordnance Survey and survives as a slight rise in the hedge-line at NY 5359 6437, forming an unsurveyable platform. It measures approximately 22m east-west, but is of indeterminate dimensions on the south side. |

"Nearly due north of Low Wall (NY 5350 6425) are slight indications of Milecastle 55, partly excavated in 1900, when it yielded later fourth century pottery." (2)
