Summary : The conjectural site of milecastle 57 at Cambeckhill, part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall. MacLauchlan suggested that the milecastle stood on the west bank of the river, but that this would be a furlong short of the 'proper distance' from Walton milecastle; the buildings at Cambeckhill are on the proper spot. The measured distance between turrets 56B and 57A would place the milecastle at Cambeckhill Farm at NY 5081 6368, but there is no surface trace of the milecastle and no finds have been made.
More information : "Cambeckhill Farmhouse (NY 508 637) covers the site of milecastle 57." (1) NY 507 637. A trench was cut by the MPBW before a new barn was erected in the farmyard of Cambeckhill Farm. All that remained of the Wall was a foundation of red sandstone and rubble c 9'6" wide but this had been spread slightly by stone robbing. The farm is on the site of Milecastle No 57 but no surface traces of this are visible. The ditch, however, can be seen running under the modern field boundary W of the farmyard, reduced by ploughing on the S side of the hedge, but clear on the N side. (2) There are no visible remains of the wall or ditch. (3) MacLauchlan suggested that the milecastle stood on the west bank of the river, but that this would be a furlong short of the 'proper distance' from Walton milecastle; the buildings at Cambeckhill are on the proper spot (4a).
