MILECASTLE 57

DESCRIPTION + /

The conjectural site of milecastle 57 at Cambeckhill, part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall. MacLauchlan suggested that the milecastle stood on the west bank of the river, but that this would be a furlong short of the 'proper distance' from Walton milecastle; the buildings at Cambeckhill are on the proper spot. The measured distance between turrets 56B and 57A would place the milecastle at Cambeckhill Farm at NY 5081 6368, but there is no surface trace of the milecastle and no finds have been made.
