Summary : An unidentified round barrow excavated circa 1840 by J Sydenham. His barrow 11, it is listed by Grinsell as Winterborne St Martin 34f. Both Grinsell and RCHME suggest that it may be one of the barrows located just outside and to the northwest of Maiden Castle (see SY 68 NE 30 and associated monuments). Sydenham described the barrow as follows: "In a barrow somewhat north of the last [SY 68 NE 162] was a skeleton deposited on the floor, and near the top were two similar interments. Fragments of charcoal and ashes were sprinkled throughout the chalk and rubble of which the barrow was constructed". The suggestion that the barrow was "somewhat north" suggests that SY 68 NE 26 and associated monuments should also be considered possible candidates. This barrow was originally described as part of SY 68 NE 102. That record should be consulted for additional sources and information. |
