MILECASTLE 53

DESCRIPTION + /

The site of roman milecastle 53, part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall. The site is now occupied by a post-medieval house and garden. The excavation in 1932 found that most of the milecastle had been robbed of masonry and the original floor had been removed so that no internal buildings remained. The north wall abutted Hadrian's Wall and some turf work of the turf milecastle remained in the north east corner and south section. When the milecastle area was examined in 1990 no remains were visible on the ground.
