Summary : Geophysical survey uncovered the site of a Roman courtyard villa; excavations confirmed this and also produced evidence for Iron Age occupation of the site. Finds from the villa suggest it was occupied all through the Roman period. A Roman coin hoard was also found here by a metal detector; it consisted of 9377 silver denarii which ranged in date from Mark Anthony (31 BC) to Severus Alexander (AD 222-35). The hoard was presumably deposited sometime in the mid-3rd century. |
