More information : [NY 53694288] Nunnery on site of [TI] Priory [GT] (Benedictine Nuns). (1)
Nunnery, a mansion built on the site of the Priory of Armathwaite (Benedictine Nuns), founded before 1200 and dissolved in 1537, situated in Ainstable parish at the junction of the Eden and Croglin rivers. A small part of the monastic buildings, pulled down circa 1715, is built into the west end of the present house. (2)(3)
A largely modernised private residence. Evidence of a built-up doorway and small windows, incorporated in the fabric on the west side, probably represent the remains of the monastic building referred to. See photograph. (4)
