More information : [NY 551 4088] St Oswald's Church [TU] (NY 5554 4096) Bell Tower. (1) St Oswald's Church, Kirkoswald, a Norman church considerably altered and enlarged in the fourteenth century, and again when it became a Secular college from 1523 until dissolved in 1548. Beneath the west end of the church is a spring called St Oswald's or Renald's well. The tower or belfry, restored in 1892, stands on a low hill 200 yards from the east end. There is the arm of a cross-head built into the wall at the north east corner which looks like the remains of a medieval high cross (See NY 54 SE 7 for remains of domestic building belonging to college). (2-5) Further restoration work was carried out on the church in the 19th century. The well abuts the external west face and is stone lined with an approach flight of steps. The remains of a small alleged consecration cross and part of a sundial are built into the churchyard retaining wall in the position noted. See photographs. (6)
