Summary : Fortified house, probably built in the mid 15th century as a tower house. The building was altered in the late 17th or early 18th century and extended in the late 18th century. Further alterations were carried out in the late 19th century. Built of sandstone, with slate and tile roofs.

Armathwaite Castle is a modern house, on the site of the 15th/16th century peel tower belonging to the Skelton family, situated near the river Eden at Armathwaite. (2)

A pele tower of four storeys with a recent addition and an Early
Georgian front. (3)

The pele tower is as described by Pevsner and is in good condition.
