Summary : A winding engine house situated to the east of the pump house at Marriott's Shaft, South Frances Mine. It was constructed in 1888 to house a 43-/23-inch Holman compound winding engine and is built of granite and killas rubble, measures 18.9 metres by 14.4 metres and survives to a height of 9.5 metres. The engine was set into the first floor and used the boilers of the central boiler house (Monument UID 1213750). |
More information : Winding house approximately 30 metres east of pump engine to Marriott's Shaft on South Wheal Frances sett. Built in the late 1890s for South Frances United Mine. Built of granite rubble, now roofless. Rectangular plan of two storeys. It contained a horizontal cross compound engine made by Holman's of Camborne. Part of one of the best equipped mines in Cornwall, closed 1918. (1)
