More information : A probable perimeter road runs around the east and north-east sides of the Jervaulx Abbey precinct boundary (SE 18 NE 148), traceable in the east as a broad, shallow, hollow, but further north as a terrace way. Whilst in the east the hollow could be the remains of a ditch outside the precinct boundary, it is more likely to be a road because any ditch is conspicuously missing further north. Such an interpretation is also strengthened by the fact that two other roads (SE 18 NE 166 and 167) connect with the feature. The road/hollow/terrace is centred at SE 1751 8565. In the south the stretch of road surviving as a hollow has been somewhat degraded by ridge-and-furrow ploughing, but further north that surviving as terrace-way is undisturbed. These areas of Jervaulx Park are currently used as pasture for sheep, cattle and horses.
Surveyed at 1:1000 scale as part of the RCHME Jervaulx Abbey Survey (feature TR9). See report (1a) and plans in the NMR for more details. (1) |
