More information : Traces of a road/hollow way survive within a broad, shallow depression immediately south-west of the ruins of the conventual buildings of Jervaulx Abbey within Jervaulx Park. The remains are centred at SE 1709 8566. In the east the road branches off another, probably monastic, road (SE 18 NE 162) which runs north towards the ruins; it then dies out in the floor of the depression but re-emerges as a hollow way climbing up the western side of the depression after which it is overlain by a World War 2 ammunition stand (SE 18 NE 198) and cannot be traced further. It is probably monastic in origin since at its junction with SE 18 NE 162 it is overlain by a late 16th-century garden pavilion (SE 18 NE 177). Jervaulx Park is currently used as pasture for sheep and cattle.
Surveyed at 1:1000 scale as part of the RCHME Jervaulx Abbey Survey (feature TR7). See report (1a) and plans in the NMR for more details. (1) |
