More information : Priory Barn seems to be an early 16th century building, with two late 13th century windows, which may have come from the priory, inserted in its south wall. Near the entrance to `The Priory' house at ST 22972481 there is some old walling with tracery which has certainly been re-used. Otherwise there is no visible evidence of the Priory. See Photos. (1)
Priory Barn, down a lane leading from the north side of the street. Only surviving building of the Augustinian Priory founded about 1220. Now in the yard of a building contractor. The structure is of local stone rubble, the north end repaired with red brick. Old tile roof. Various door and window openings of Bishop's Lydeard stone. The south end of the barn is well preserved and has two 2 light early C14 windows with dripmoulds and plate tracery. Later tie-beam roof inside. (2)
Excavations at Priory Barn and a survey of the barn itself suggest it is the remains of a monastic range with a gatehouse at the South end, and in its present form dates to the C15th/C16th, incorporating earlier material. No buildings were revealed to the west of the barn suggesting that area was the priory precinct. (3) |
