Location :
Oxfordshire

Blewbury
Grid Ref : SU5450086100
Summary : Excavations undertaken in 1967 within the hillfort on Blewburton Hill (SU 58 NW 1) uncovered a ditch associated with Neolithic artefacts, including a polished stone axe. Neolithic and Early Bronze Age flints had turned up as unstratified finds in previous excavations also, although no associated features apppear to have been encountered on those occasions. The ditch in particular appears to have prompted inclusion of the site in a number of gazetteers of possible Neolithic causewayed enclosures. The site has been considered as part of the RCHME's Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic project. On the basis of the available evidence, it is impossible to state with any certainty that the ditch represents part of an enclosure. The Neolithic finds were previously recorded as part of the main hillfort record (SU 58 NW 1). See that record for a more detailed list of published and archival sources relating to Blewburton Hill. No Neolithic features could be identified on aerial photographs when the area was mapped by Lambourn Downs NMP.
