A monastery dedicated to St Peter was founded at Bredon before 716 AD by Eanulph, grandfather of King Offa, with land granted by Ethelbald, King of Mercia. This monastery continued under an abbot of its own until after 841 AD, but before the Norman Conquest it became part of the possessions of Worcester Priory, probably in 964 AD.
