Summary : The site of the former country residence of the Prior of Spalding. The Hall, of which nothing now remains, and its grounds, were moated. Traces of the moat remain. The Hall was extant in 1311 (when the chapel was built), and was dissolved at the Reformation. Scheduled. |
More information : The site of a medieval moated monastic grange and the remains of a retreat house. A grange was established at Wykeham at the beginning of the 14th century and served as a place of rest and recuperation for the monks of Spalding Priory.
The rectangular moated island is occupied by the chapel (See UID 352309) and the present house, which dates to the late 17th century. Raised ground on the island indicates the possible location of buried building remains associated with the monastic grange. Two linear earthworks in the southern half of the island are thought to represent the remains of medieval dylings, which drained land for pastoral or arable use. A shallow depression, probably a pond, lies close to the southern moat arm. A second, waterfilled, pond in the south-eastern part of the site is believed to be modern. The present house is Listed Grade II; the remainder of the site is scheduled. (3) |
