Summary : Burial Ground. The second burial ground of the Royal Hospital for Seamen, opened 1747 and closed in 1857. The ground included a mausoluem of 1750 for the officers of the Hospital, probably designed by Thomas Ripley. The building takes the form of a one-storey building. A cartouche in the pediment bears the inscription "5th July 1749. John Meriton Pensioner was ye first Man buried in this ground". The burial ground is bounded by a boundary fence of mid 18th century date which incorporates wrought iron railings. The ground was subsequently used as a playground for the Royal Hospital School and has been partly built over. Part of the site was used for a dining hall for the Royal Hospital School in 1875 and in 1925-34 the Seamen's Hospital Society built the Devonport Nurses Home on the former burial ground. |
