Summary : The Refreshment Rooms at London Zoo were designed by Anthony Salvin (1799-1881) the Zoo's architect and built in three phases between 1868 and 1878. In 1929-30 the building was converted into the Parrot House for the display of parrots and diving birds. The building is in a picturesque cottage ornee style, built in brick with tiled roofs. On the southside of the south block is a central entrance and a tile tea terrace which now houses cages. A large kiosk which was the Garden Cafe, a rebuilding of an earlier teahouse, is situated on the northwest side. The south block or Dining Room is the earliest part of the building. It was built in 1868-9 by the builders Simpson and Company. The same company constructed the north block, known as the Refreshment Room, in 1873. This was later known as The Fellows Dining Room. The west block was built in 1877-78 by builders George Smith and Company. This was the Second Class Refreshment Room and later a Tea Room. The Refreshment Rooms were converted into the Parrot House in 1929-30 following construction of the Regent Restaurant (Monument HOB UID 1168877). |
