More information : An armed merchant vessel requisitioned temporarily by the Royal Navy to ship cased petrol to the Normandy beach head during the D-Day landings. She was waiting at the invasion assembly point off the Isle of Wight when attacked by a German E-boat. Hit by a single torpedo, the ASHANTI burst into flames and then exploded, killing all 10 crew and 7 DEMS gunners. (7)
The ASHANTI was packed full of vital jerry-cans of petrol for tanks. As she waited for the rest of the convoy at the assembly point a German E-boat torpedoed her. The explosion fuelled by the petrol was enormous. (4)(8)(9)
