Summary : The probable site of Roman milecastle 58. A geophysical survey in 1980-1 found no evidence for the milecastle. At NY 49786258 there is a slight rise in the hedgeline south-west of the Ordnance Survey siting, and an unusually large quantity of stones lies in the hedge bottom; the Ordnance Survey position is accepted.

"About two hundred yards west of Newtown of Irthington, the site of milecastle 58 is evident." (2)

The presumed site of the milecastle occurs at a slight natural rise, but there are no visible remains of the milecastle itself. (3)

A geophysical survey in 1980-1 found no evidence for the milecastle. NY 4978 6258 - there is a slight rise in the hedgeline south west of the OS siting, and an unusually large quantity of stones lies in the hedge bottom; the OS position is accepted. (4-4a)
