More information : (Area centred SD 087 959) From the area north of the fort (supposedly an annexe) shattered slates, bricks, floor tessarae, tegulae, box-flue tiles and heavy floor tiles were found suggesting a high status building heated by a hypocaust. (1)
The remains found by Fair (authy 1) were considered to be those of a civil settlement but no trace of an annexe has been found. (2)
The building is considered to be a mansio. (3)
No trace of a vicus to the north of the fort, now covered by an unmanaged plantation, or anywhere else in the vicinity. This area was examined in the course of the RCHME: Ravenglass Roman Fort Survey in 1998; the 1:1000 plan and text are in NMRC Swindon. (4) |
