Summary : The former precinct or outer court to the monastery/cathedral, known in the 16th century as the Abbey Garth, was converted into accomodation for the dean and the twelve new prebends at the Dissolution. The area is now occupied by The College and fragments of the enclosing wall remain. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that despite the preponderance of Georgian facades to buildings and the claims of 17th century prebends to wholesale rebuilding , much of the fabric of the College buildings is that of the Medieval monastery. |
