Summary : A prison on the site of a former military camp. HMP Wealstun officially opened on 1st April 1995. It is an amalgamation of HMPs Thorp Arch and Rudgate. In April 1959 Thorp Arch opened as a special local open prison for men. In 1961 it was decided that a remand centre would be developed at the site. This opened in February 1965 and adopted the name Thorp Arch. The earlier open prison became known as Rudgate. In 1981 a 72 place unit, C Wing, opened and in 1997 a DOW VI (Directorate Of Works VI) accommodation block opened on what is known as the secure side of the prison. The open side accommodation and facilites still occupy the buildings of the original site which had been a military camp. The 1960s remand centre cell blocks are two small, three-storied blocks and B Wing was extended when C Wing was built. A small segregation unit was added in recent years. |
