More information : (NY 4185 5880) The east face of the west wall of Milecastle 64 (Drawdykes) was located in June 1962, some 114 yds west of Brunstock Beck, on the line of the Wall as marked on the OS survey. (1)
A slab of red sandstone was found during excavations by Lt Col P F Fane Gladwin in 1962, unstratified, on the site of this milecastle. Two letters survive near the lower margin - 'MP'. (2)
Milestone found on the west side of MC64 and presumably came from the Military Way. A quadrant cut from a cylindrical milestone. (3)
The milestone was deposited in Carlisle Museum in 1969. (4)
No visible remains of milecastle. (5)
The milecastle was excavated in 1962, but the results were unpublished until 1980; it was found to be a short axis type milestone (6a). The milecastle has been transcribed onto the RCHME overlay from the illustration in the above report (at NY 4177 5874). There is no surface trace in the waste ground of the former army camp. The milestone is now recorded as NY 45 NW 77. (6)
