Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 113864

Hob Uid: 113864
Location :
County of Herefordshire
Colwall
Grid Ref : SO7300042000
Summary : At Brockbury, in the parish of Colwall, was a 'cell' of two monks, subject to the Priory of Malvern Major. At Barton was another small Benedictine foundation....founded before 1199 and recorded by Gervase of Canterbury. As Barton and Brockbury are only a short distance apart it seems possible the authorities used may refer to a single house. There is no trace of either foundation.
More information : A Benedictine Priory Cell at Colwall or Brockbury is listed by Knowles and Hadcock.

"At Brockbury, in the parish of Colwall, was a 'cell' of two monks, subject to the Priory of Malvern Major. At Barton was another small Benedictine foundation....founded before 1199 and recorded by Gervase of Canterbury."(b) As Barton and Brockbury are only a short distance apart it seems possible the authorities used may refer to a single house. (Barton is shown as doubtful). (1)

Brockbury, a priory to GM (Great Malvern).

Barton - shown as an unfortified manor house or courthouse (not ecclesiastical). (2)

The location of a Priory Cell at any of the above places could not be determined. There are no references to any such establishments in the local libraries, and other local enquiries elicited no further information. (3)
