Summary : Medieval gatehouse and barbican, formerly with drawbridge, to Durham Castle; Norman in origin but much altered. Extensively remodelled and enlarged in the late 18th century. Bishop Tunstall (1530-59) is said to have widened the entrance passage by dismantling, raising and resetting the Norman archway and early Gothic vaulting. James Wyatt remodelled the gatehouse in 1791 for Bishop Barrington. The late 11th century/early 12th century core of the building was retained and supplemented by a heightened central tower and flanking lodges. The outer gateway is probably circa 1791 and linking, side and front walls probably 18th and early 19th century. |
