Summary : The site of the Roman cemetery of Great Chesters, indicated by finds of tombstones in this area in 1817.
More information : [NY 702663] [Conventional sign for site of a cemetery] (1) The burial ground of the fort is supposed to have been near the spot called Mill Hill, just west of Walltown Mill, where in 1817 a great number of stones were dug up, one bearing the figure of a woman. Area of cemetery attested by finds of tombstones Nos 1742, 1746 and 1747 (3). (2-3) Mill Hill is a featureless area of pasture, centred at NY 70506629. There have been no recent finds. (4) Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (5)
