Regional Government Headquarters Hexham

Hob Uid: 1118507
Location :
Northumberland
Hexham
Grid Ref : NY9380064400
Summary : Hexham was a former cold store which was converted by the Home Office in the early 1980s into a post-war Regional Goverment Headquarters, from where, it was envisaged in the event of nuclear war the administration of the region would be conducted. The building was bought in december 1996 by local builder's merchants Matthew Charlton & Sons who intended to redevelop the site. However, at the time of field investigation in 1997 the building had been demolsihed.
More information : NY 938 644. The Regional Government Headquarters is located to the
north-east of Hexham town centre adjacant to the Carlisle to
Newcastle Upon Tyne railway line. It is located within a former
Second World War or early post-war coldstore. This cold store is of
a standard type constructed by the governemnt to hold strategic food
stock piles, and were often referred to as Buffer Depots.

It is not known when the cold store was converted into an RGHQ,
although it is known that substantial rebuilding work was underway
in 1983 (1a). It is, however, uncertain whether the building was
being converted for the first time or modified to bring it up to the
standards required for an RGHQ.

At the time of investigation the building was being demolished. (1
