HOLDGATE CASTLE

Medieval castle comprising motte and possible double bailey surviving as an earthwork; remains of 13th-14th century semi-circular mural tower. The castle contained a College of secular clergy, founded pre 1210, dissolved after 1373. The motte, extant in the second half of the 12th century, is circular in plan measuring 44.5 by 41 metres and stands to a height of 9 metres. Surveyed by RCHME in 1986. Scheduled.
