Summary : Arsenal station opened on the 15th December 1906 as Gillespie Road to serve the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway's line from Hammersmith to Finsbury Park. The station was designed by Leslie Green using moulded terracotta blocks, heavily glazed in a deep red ruby colour described as 'sand de boeuf' - oxblood. The ground floor contained the booking office and upper lift landing whilst a mezzanine floor contained the lift gear. From 31st October 1932 the station was renamed Arsenal (Highbury Hill) upon the suggestion of the then team's general manager, Herbert Chapman. Acquisition of the property next door enabled the ticket hall to be doubled in size and a wider subway to be built; these were finished by February 1934. |
