More information : Site of Romano-British settlement at Eller Beck consisting of six groups of small enclosures (sites A-F) within perimeter walls, together with a well-preserved field system (see plan and air photographs). Enclosure 'D' sited to SD 642 780 from published plan. (1-2)
'D', at SD 6421 7799, is a small unit comprising an enclosure and croft. The banks are well-defined and have a maximum height of 0.6m.
The site is down to pasture. Surveyed on 1:2500 MSD (for 1:10,000 publication only). See illustration card for SD 67 NW 16. (3)
SD 64207 77991 (FCE). Complex 'D' is a small enclosure, almost triangular in plan, measuring a maximum of c 34m by 26m. It is divided into two by an east-west stony bank, with a single entrance in the west giving access to the northern compartment, and the southern compartment accessed from there via a gap in the dividing bank. There is no evidence for structures within the southern compartment, although various small scarps hint at one, possibly two, platforms or buildings in the north. The northern wall of the enclosure is on the line of, and seems to have reused, a linear stony bank or field boundary, probably part of a coaxial field system of Iron Age/Romano-British date (SD 67 NW 93).
The enclosure is part of scheduled ancient monument Lancashire 136h (4a). It lies within unimproved pasture, and overall is in good condition.
Transcribed from APs and/or surveyed at 1:2500 scale as part of the RCHME High Park/Cow Close Survey (feature SC9). See report (4b) and plans in the NMR for more details. (4)
