More information : Site of Romano-British settlement at Eller Beck consisting of six groups of small enclosures (sites A-F) within perimeter walls, together with a well-preserved field system (see plan and air photographs). Enclosure 'B' sited to SD 640 782 from published plan. (1-2)
'B', at SD 6401 7815, comprises six recognisable crofts with both rectangular and circular huts. All walling is collapsed rubble, mainly turf-covered with a maximum height of 0.6m. The most southerly croft has been cut by the Eller Beck exposing a limestone paved floor.
The site is down to pasture. Surveyed on 1:2500 MSD (for 1:10,000 publication only). See illustration card for SD 67 NW 16. (3)
SD 64031 78149 (FCE). Complex 'B' is sub-rectilinear in plan, and is surrounded by a broad stony bank on all sides except uphill to the east which abuts against a steep natural scarp. Within the enclosure a number of very spread stony banks divide the interior into four unequal strips, themselves sub-divided by further stony banks. There is little evidence of access between the strips. In this respect the monument has parallels with the nearby complex 'C' (SD 67 NW 16) which has been excavated and has produced Romano-British pottery. Two of the strips also contain small circular structures ?similar to the so-called 'hut' excavated in 'C'. However, two rectangular buildings associated with the monument (authority 3's 'rectangular huts') seem rather to be stratigraphically later (see SD 67 NW 65-66). Two tracks converge at the settlement's north-west corner, pass round it, and continue south-east across the Eller Beck towards 'C'.
The enclosure is a scheduled ancient monument, SAM no. Lancashire 136g (4a). It lies within unimproved pasture, and overall is in reasonable condition although the southern end is suffering some erosion from the Eller Beck, and elsewhere parts are now obscured by gorse.
Transcribed from APs and/or surveyed at 1:2500 scale as part of the RCHME High Park/Cow Close Survey (feature SC4). See report (4b) and plans in the NMR for more details. (4)
An Iron Age/Roman settlement is visible as earthworks on air photographs and lidar, at SD 6403 7814. The settlement consists of a rectilinear enclosure, with a number of internal irregular earthworks. An early medieval building abuts the enclosure on its northern edge (UID 1109011). An associated coaxial field system is recorded separately (UID 1109069). The features are extant on the latest 2009 lidar. (5-6)
