Summary : The Coldharbour Gate at the Tower of London was built in the 13th century by Henry III as a massive gatehouse to provide an entrance between the palace ward and the bailey by the south west corner of the White Tower. The gate became redundant and was demolished c. 1675 when the lead from the roof was removed and taken to Greenwich to be used at the Royal Observatory. During excavations between 1953 and 1956 the foundations were exposed and consolidated for display. |
