GIBSIDE

Pleasure grounds to Gibside Hall which were laid out between 1729 and 1760 for George Bowes by William Joyce with advice from Stephen Switzer who had prepared designs in 1731 and 1732. The wooded areas are situated to the northeast and east with open areas to the south and southwest. Plantations and the serpentine drive were laid out in 1729-30. A fountain was set up in 1742 and a terrace walk was laid out in 1746-49.
