More information : Inscribed Roman Altar, original site unknown, has stood in the nave of St Michael's Church, Michaelchurch (SO 521255) since 1909, in the recess of the former N doorway. The base was rediscovered in 1820 and the upper part some time later. In medieval times it was adapted for use as a stoup. (1) SO52142551 The Roman altar is as described and still in the north doorway of the church. St Michael's church has, according to a notice in the porch, been declared redundant as from 1972. It is of Norman and later date and has 13thc wall decorations. Condition good. (2)
Full description of the altar converted to a stoup in the late 11th-12th century. The dedication on the altar translates from the latin as either: "To the god Tridam...Bellicus presented this altar" or "To the god of the cross-roads, Beccius presented this altar". (3)
