| Summary : Surface lithic scatter to the north east of Windmill Hill (SU 07 SE 22), sampled by fieldwalking in autumn 1983. Although the results of the full programme suggest that a continuous, low density scatter exists all around Avebury, this was one of the least productive areas. |
| More information : A fieldwalking survey was undertaken in the Avebury area in the autumn of 1983 by Robin Holgate and Julian Thomas. One of the areas examined included fields to the north east of Windmill Hill (sited approximately from a distribution map published by Holgate). Few details are given in interim statements. Holgate notes the presence of an almost continuous, low density scatter around Avebury, and judging by the distribution plots, this area (and that immediately to the north - SU 07 SE 64) appears to have produced considerably less than other areas walked, contrasting notably with the field south west of Windmill Hill (SU 07 SE 62). One of Holgate's plots shows no Neolithic implements from this area. (1, 2) |
