Summary : Human bones, pottery and flints ploughed up near Windmill Hill in 1891, suggesting disturbance of a burial of probable early Bronze Age date. Suggested to represent the possible site of a ploughed-out barrow, and listed as such by Grinsell as Avebury (or Winterbourne Monkton) 48c. |
More information : According to JW Brooke, in October 1891 some bones were ploughed up on Windmill Hill (precise location uncertain) which, upon inspection, proved to be human. Further investigation at the findspot recovered more bones, a few flints and "some pieces of British ware". Brooke suggested that the finds marked the location of a ploughed out barrow of late neolithic or early Bronze Age date. (1)
