Summary : A circular enclosure visible as a cropmark on air photographs. It comprises two concentric but widely spaced circular ditches, the outer circa 65 metres in diameter and the inner circa 20 metres. It lies on the line of the Maxey cursus (TF 10 NW 58) though the cropmarks of the latter are indistinct at this point and the relationship is unclear. Note however that a similar enclosure a short distance to the northwest (TF 10 NW 59) also overlies the cursus, and excavation showed the outer ditch to be a probable "hengiform" monument, and the inner to have enclosed a barrow mound. Both appeared contemporary, and considerably later than the cursus. A further, similar enclosure was located further east (TF 10 NW 80), this time north of the cursus. |
More information : TF 1302 0755 A large, double ditched and concentric feature originally noted in the RCHM 1960 cropmark survey (a) as Site 80. The feature has since been destroyed by gravel extraction. In 1997 RCHME undertook a 1:10000 scale, computer-aided transcription of the Maxey Complex area. This feature which may be a small henge or hengiform monument of Neolithic date, or a Prehistoric round barrow lies on the line of the Maxey cursus (TF 10 NW 58) southern ditch. The cursus ditch was not visible at this point, but it is generally a faint cropmark in this area. The relationship of the two features has never been definitely established. The concentric ditches are less than circular; the overall diameter is approximately 60-65 m, and the internal diameter is 20 m. A second, very similar feature lies just over 1 km to the east, TF 10 NW 80. (1) |
