Monument Number 1086198

Hob Uid: 1086198
Location :
City of Peterborough
Northborough
Grid Ref : TF1453007530
Summary : A group of eight ring ditches are all visible as cropmarks on air photographs. The central ring ditch in the group features a central pit and is defined by three concentric ditches, the immermost one being eccentrically positioned in relation to the other two. The outermost ditch is circa 30 metres in diameter. Four more ring ditches lie in an arc to the northwest; all are defined by a singel ditch and have diameters varying between 20 metres and 32 metres. The ditch of one is slighted by the triple ditched linear feature TF 10 NW 85. The other three ring ditches in the group of eight are to the southeast of the central one. Again, all are single ditched, and their diameters are 20 to 22 metres, though the circuit of one is incomplete. An arc of ditch 50 metres to the west may represent a ninth ring ditch.
More information : A group of eight ring ditches which define probable round barrows of
Prehistoric date were seen as cropmarks and transcribed at 1:2500
scale by RCHME Aerial Survey. The central barrow in the group
(TF 1453 0753) has a central pit and is defined by three ditches, the
inner ditch being eccentrically positioned in relation to the other
two. The overall diameter of this barrow is approximately 30 m.
Four barrows in the group lie in an arc to the north-west of the
central one; all are defined by a single ditch and have diameters
of 30-32 m and 20-22 m. The ditch of one of these is slighted by
a triple ditched boundary (TF 10 NW 85). The remaining three barrows
in the group lie to the south-east of the central one; all
single-ditched, they have diameters of 20-22 m, although one of them
is incomplete. This group of barrows lies at a distance of 60 m,
opposite the open end of an enclosure (TF 10 NW 77). The arc of a
ditch, at TF 1435 0759, 50 m to the west of the group may be all that
remains of a ninth barrow, perhaps partially destroyed by Medieval
ploughing. These features were previously included in record
TF 10 NW 12. (1)
