Summary : Three ring ditches visible as cropmarks on air photographs. Two are defined by a single ditch, respectively 26 metres and 19 metres in diameter. The third is defined by three concentric ditches, the outermost being 28 metres in diameter. The innermost appears quite broad and may comprise pits or a series of individual ditch lengths. There are also some pits visible in the interior. This triple ring-ditch was excavated in 1986-7. Published details are few but it seems that massive timber posts stood in the interior (it is not clear, but this may imply that the inner "ditch" was a timber circle). |
More information : Three ring ditches were seen as cropmarks and transcribed at 1:2500 scale by RCHME Aerial Survey. The ring ditches are probably those of Prehistoric round barrows. Two of the barrows at TF 1352 0751 and TF 1357 0757 are defined by a single ditch and are 26 m and 19 m in diameter respectively. The third ring ditch, at TF 1359 0755 has internal pits and is defined by three ditches, with an overall diameter of 28 m. The innermost ditch is broad and irregular, perhaps composed of pits or separate ditch sections. It is believed to have been excavated, but there is no information. Two linear features defined by a fine ditch lie to the east of the triple ring ditch and could be aligned on it, although their date and function is unknown. All these features may now have been destroyed by gravel extraction. (1)
