Summary : A curvilinear, open-ended enclosure of probable later prehistoric date is visible as cropmarks on air photographs. It is aligned roughly northwest-southeast, with the open end facing southeast. It measures 90 metres by 70 metres. Three pits are visible just within the circuit of the enclosure, and four more occur in an erratic line down the centre of the enclosure. Another two are located just outside the northwest end of the enclosure. These pits may be associated with the enclosure, or alternatively may be connected with the settlement features which appear to overlie it. The open end of the enclosure is orientated towards a cluster of 8 ring ditches (TF 10 NW 79). |
More information : TF 1438 0766 A curvilinear, open-ended enclosure of possible Prehistoric date was seen as a cropmark and transcribed at 1:2500 scale by RCHME Aerial Survey. It lies 490 m to the north-east of Etton Causewayed Enclosure (TF 10 NW 51); the proximity of this and other similar, enigmatic enclosures might suggest the potential for a similar date. The enclosure is aligned NW to SE with the open end facing south-east. The enclosure is symmetric in plan, 90 m wide and 70 m long. Three pits lie just within the circuit of the ditch, four more in an erratic line down the centre of the enclosure, and another two just outside the north-west end of the enclosure. It is not certain whether all of these would necessarily be associated with the enclosure, or with settlement features which appear to overlie it. A cluster of eight barrows (TF 10 NW 79) lie opposite the open end of the enclosure at a distance of 60 m. (1) |
