Summary : An open-ended, rectilinear enclosure is visible as a cropmark on air photographs. It is an elongated, tapering, roughly square-ended feature, aligned east-west. The open, western, end is circa 105 metres wide, while the closed western end is circa 50 metres wide. It is 180 metres in length, and is located approximately 180 metres north of the Etton causewayed enclosure (TF 10 NW 51). A large pit is visible as a cropmark inside the western end of the enclosure, while a ring ditch is visible near the southern side, towards the western end. The enclosure is presumed to be of later prehistoric date. A possible comparison is with the site at Godmanchester (TL 27 SE 80) which has been shown by excavation to be Neolithic. |
More information : TF 1375 0765 A large, rectilinear, open-ended enclosure of possible Prehistoric date was seen as a cropmark and transcribed at 1:2500 scale by RCHME Aerial Survey. It is an elongated, tapering and roughly square-ended feature, aligned east to west. Tapering to 50 m at the west, it is 105 m wide at the open, east-facing end, and 180 m in length. It lies approximately 180 m NNW of the causewayed enclosure (TF 10 NW 51). A large pit lies inside the western end of the enclosure, and at TF 1377 0762 is a 14 m diameter ring ditch. Although different in size, this enclosure might be compared to that recorded at Godmanchester, TL 258 710, which excavation has shown to be Neolithic in date. These features are at least partially destroyed as a result of gravel extraction. (1) |
